Education
The City of Cambridge is widely-regarded as an education center and has been referred to as the "Intellectual Capital of the World." Cambridge boasts excellent choices in elementary and secondary education. Public, private, parochial and charter school opportunities are available, providing parents with a diversity of exceptional choices for their children. More than 85 percent of Cambridge residents have graduated from high school and more than 54 percent have a college degree.
Over one-quarter of the City's residents are students and the colleges and universities employ one out of six workers in Cambridge. Cambridge is home to four world-class institutions of higher learning including Harvard, MIT, Lesley University and Cambridge College. These four institutions enroll one-quarter of Cambridge's total population and are the driving factor behind the city's knowledge-based economy.
Several other institutions of advanced study in highly specialized fields, such as music and theology, also have a home in Cambridge. In addition, a variety of specialty schools focus on topics such as computers, languages, massage, cooking, yoga and glassblowing. Some of these schools include: Andover Newton Theological School, Art Institute of Boston, Bunker Hill Community College, Berklee College of Music, Episcopal Divinity School, Hellenic College School of Theology, Longy School of Music, Massachusetts College of Art, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Science, MGH Institute of Health Professions, New England College of Finance, New England School of Law, School of the Museum of Fine Arts.
The universities' collective ability to attract top employers, new ventures, research dollars, and scholars from around the globe makes Cambridge one of the most important intellectual and commercial centers in the world.
